I was lucky to catch the final day of the exhibition “Ostzeit – Stories from a Vanished Country” at the Haus der Kulturen in Berlin. The exhibition was put together by the OSTKREUZ Agency (www.ostkreuz.de) and consisted of photographs by Sibylle Bergemann, Harald Hauswald, Ute and Werner Mahler and Maurice Weiss all of who depicted everyday life in the German Democratic Republic. Usually, when I leave a group exhibition I have clear favorites. With Ostzeit that was impossible: the individual works were so incredibly strong and singular and I caught myself a couple of times during the show audibly gasping at the beauty and comedy and tragedy of the images.
